What are META Tags and its Importance To My Website?

META Tags are not visible on the web page itself. These are HTML tags which specifies content about a webpage to browsers and applications.

More importantly, these tags can be a very valuable part of web development
and administration because they incorporate vital information for search
engines. Some search engines do not use meta tags but others rely heavily
on these for site placement. In conclusion, to error on the safe side, it is
better to include meta tags than not to include them.

To see an example of Meta Tags:
Internet Explorer: Go to 'View' Menu on top and click on 'Source'.
Or right click on any blank area of this web page and click "View Source"

Netscape Navigator: Go to 'View' Menu choose 'Page Source'.
Or right click on any blank area of this web page and click 'View Page Source'

This will open your default text editor. Now, your are seeing the page's
HTML code, which is also called the blueprint of a web page. Near top of this
source code, you will find the Meta Tags. "Keywords" and "Description"
Meta Tags are what most search engines use to match your search to this
web page. These keywords and description help search engines determine
the content of the page. In our meta tags, we have included the word
"website design", which we think people might use to search for our website.

Using Meta Tags DOES NOT guarantee that your website will have high
rankings nor be indexed at all. It should be used correctly and discreetly so
not to confuse search engines. Google the leading search engine, pay no
attention to meta tags when they compile their lists. However, putting certain
terms in the meta tags, may better define how your site is indexed in search engines that uses them.
